What are your ideas on moving away fro traditional Career Fairs? Students often times not focused or not understanding why they are at Career Fairs. Are there ideas on more focused activities?
Yingfah (she/her)
01:37:17
@Joseph: Yes! Yes! Yes!

@Debbie - I can share with you an event I attended in Rochester that we will be working to replicate in Duluth this October. It was a "Career Fair" but each table had a hands-on activity that students could try. So, a student who may think they want to be in automotive got a chance to try construction, hold surgical instruments, etc.

You all have many community connections, but if you need help with guest speakers, BestPrep, https://bestprep.org/, can help. It's a free service we provide.
Tim Barrett - MDE
01:38:49
Consider a "reverse Career Fair" - have opportunities for industry members to learn about what students are learning and how they can support those efforts
Summer Hagy - MN HOSA
01:39:07
I love that idea, Tim!

In alignment with Tim’s suggestion: as we prepare students to enter work, employers need to be ready to RECEIVE a much more diverse workforce.
Eva Scates-Winston
01:42:20
Showcase what students are involved in and their learning coupled with programs that employers and orgs have in partnership with youth and community.

01:42:42
@Debbie and @Summer, Elk River Area does something very similar, a very hands-on career fair, touch, hold, feel, try out, etc.

The Works Museum is developing new activities for our elementary Family Engineering Nights, providing hands-on STEM learning opportunities for families to experience together at schools, community centers, virtually, etc. As part of this we’re co-creating activities with partners from the Dakota, Hmong, Ojibwe, Mexican and Somali communities to interweave multiple perspectives and personal connections into the activities. We’re also working to include industry partners to be part of these events as volunteers, providing another real world connection.
